Creating reminiscence boxes with customers at Bowbrook

Memory Box FINAL

To highlight World Alzheimer’s Month this September our Bowbrook team have planned some lovely activities and events to do with their residents, including creating reminiscence boxes.

Bowbrook is our state-of-the-art dementia-specialist residential care home in Staffordshire. As one of our Dementia Centres of Excellence, they offer specialist care and support in first-class facilities for people living with dementia and complex needs.

On Friday 2 September Bowbrook customers created reminiscence boxes. They filled their boxes with photos and items from their past. The aim of this activity was to remind them of happy memories and to encourage them to share their experiences and stories.

Customers included things in their boxes like their favourite; season, colour, sweets or chocolate, animal, sports event or football team and hobbies. Along with anything their families might like in there.

Our Registered Manager at Bowbrook Amanda Jelbert said: “It was lovely to see our customers talking about happy memories and stories whilst creating their reminiscence boxes. They really enjoyed the activity, and they now have something that they can see when entering their room, not only will it bring back those happy times but it’s also a great way of them finding their room too.

“One of our customers said she thought it was a great way to open up conversations about their memories and what was important to them. She said she felt it had given her a connection with herself as we spoke of her memories, of her family, and in particular her children.

“It’s so important for us to have these conversations and connections with our customers and this was a lovely activity to encourage this”.
