Today we held our first Dementia Champions Group meeting. We chose to launch it this month as it is World Alzheimer’s Month.

At GreenSquareAccord we provide personalised dementia care and support across a broad spectrum of needs from pre-diagnosis to end-of-life.

Our new Dementia Champions initiative aims to have a group of colleagues from across our residential services who are trained up to have knowledge, understanding and skills in the care of people with dementia. They will encourage, support, and motivate others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia within the care setting. They will also help to promote and raise awareness of dementia.

Colleagues from our residential services nominated themselves to become a Dementia Champion and each service now has a group of nominated staff.

Champions will be accountable to our Dementia Care Manager, Jenny Mullinder, but will work independently within their own services with her guidance. Jenny will be providing the champions with training and will encourage the sharing of best practice within the Dementia Champion Group meetings, which will take place once a month.

Our Head of Residential Care Services, Michelle Barker said: “The Dementia Champions Group is a much-welcomed addition to GSA’s residential care portfolios dementia offer; facilitating and developing positive change for our customers living with dementia within our care homes.

“Based on best practice it will increase staff’s knowledge and awareness leading to supporting customers to live more independent and fulfilled lives.”
